Ronnie Milsap Career
He was born on January 16, 1943, in Robbinsville, North Carolina. He was born with a disease that made him blind. His mother left him when he was a baby, and his grandparents raised him in poverty in the Smoky Mountains until he was five years old.
At that point, he was sent to the Raleigh Governor Morehead School for the Blind. He first fell in love with music when he was a child, especially country, gospel, beat, and blues music on the radio late at night.
His teachers saw that he was good at music, so when he was seven, he started formally learning classical musicformally at Governor Morehead and learned how to play several instruments.
Unfortunately, one of the parents at school hit him, which took away the limited vision in his left eye. Milsap picked up rock and roll music and got together with some high school friends to form the band Apparitions.
He got a complete college education and went to Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia, for a short time. His goal was to become a lawyer. He was in the popular Atlanta-area R&B band The Dimensions at this time. It was a grant to law school that he turned down, and he dropped out of college to become a full-time musician.
He had his first hit in November of that year with “Never Had It So Good,” a song written by Ashford and Simpson. It peaked at No. 19 on the R&B list. When he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in the 1960s, he worked for producer Chips Moman and became a regular at the Memphis bar T.J.’s.
The same year his first album came out, his song “Loving You Is A Natural Thing” made it to the bottom of the pop charts.
In December 1972, he went to Nashville after meeting music star Charley Pride by chance. When Milsap was performing, pride was in the crowd at the Whiskey nightclub in Los Angeles.
