Toby Keith’s Career Journey
Keith went to Nashville, Tennessee, in the early 1990s. He stayed at a place called Houndogs and hung out on Music Row, where he also did street performing. He gave trial tapes made by the band to all the record companies in the city.
When Keith got home, he felt like he had failed in life because no record companies were interested in his songs. He promised himself that he would either sign a recording deal by the time he was 30 or give up on becoming a musician.
Harold Shedd, an executive for Mercury Records, was a passenger on a flight where a flight attendant worked. The flight attendant gave Harold Shedd a copy of Keith’s test tape while he was on the flight. Shedd liked what he heard, so he went to see Keith perform live to get a better idea of him before signing him to Mercury Records.
After that, Keith signed a deal with the A&M Records branch in Nashville, but the deal didn’t last long enough for him to record his third album, Blue Moon. Three songs from this album were all hits, and it was certified platinum.
Keith moved to the Nashville branch of DreamWorks Records in 1999. At the time, Stroud was head of that branch. His first single with the label was called “When Love Fades,” and it also failed to make it into the top 40.
Keith started a new record company on August 31, 2005. It was called Show Dog Nashville. It all started when his record “White Trash with Money” came out in 2006. Then came the music for the movie “Broken Bridges.”
Keith put out this collection of songs in September 2017. It’s called “The Bus Songs.” Eleven songs were made for this album; two are brand new, five have been re-recorded, and five have already been released.
