According to deadline: In August 2020, Netflix cancelled season 2 of The Society because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Society was initially renewed for a second season last summer, and it had been scheduled to premiere in late 2020. The streaming service also eliminated the teen shows I Am Not Okay With This after just one season and GLOW after three.
Because of the rules for health and safety, it became too expensive to make the movie. In the 10th episode of the first season, “How It Happens,” the parents are in the authentic West Ham. In an interview with Variety, creator Christopher Keyser said they were well into making season 2 when they got the shocking news that the show was being cancelled.
What Would ‘The Society’ Season 2 Be About?
Gordie, played by Jose Julian, is one of the best characters in The Society. In season 1, episode 2, “Our Town,” he wonders if the teens could be in a parallel world, which is hinted at at the show’s end. Keyser said that he wanted The Society to have five seasons because that would have given him time to explain why the teens in their small town are the only ones left. Since this is the most important question from the first season, it would have made for an exciting second season.
Keyser also said that the second season of The Society would be about “the outpost,” which is a place that Grizz (Jack Mulhern) finds in the first season’s last episode. Here, the players can farm and grow food. Since the people in The Society live in a made-up town, there were a lot of options.
Keyser said the second season would be about “how we make caste systems and an underclass.” It had significant political effects but also led to many new ties and helped figure out who was in charge and who wasn’t” (via Variety). Netflix could have made money from Season 2 of The Society.
