1 “The Pregnancy Project” (2012)
“The Pregnancy Project” is a made-for-TV movie starring Alexa PenaVega, a former “Spy Kids” star, in which she portrays an adolescent who pretends to be pregnant for an entire year.
The novel “The Pregnancy Project” explores common misconceptions about teen pregnancies and is based on a real-life experiment done by American high school student Gaby Rodriguez.
One of Rodriguez’s main aims was to get young people to see that “the decisions they make now will ultimately affect their lives.” The unorthodox plot of “The Pregnancy Project” gives viewers a fresh take on a stale genre, and the film benefits from solid acting throughout.
2. “For Keeps” (1988)
“For Keeps” stars Molly Ringwald as Darcy, a high school senior who gets pregnant right before graduation. This “bundle of joy” drastically disrupts her and her boyfriend Stan’s plans.
The film broke new ground by exploring adoption, abortion, and postpartum depression through the eyes of adolescent protagonists. Although “For Keep” was a commercial success and many people applauded Molly Ringwald’s performance, the film was panned by critics, who gave it an 18% on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, that shouldn’t put you off. You can never get enough of Molly Ringwald, and the issues addressed in “For Keeps” are timely.
3. “The Pregnancy Pact” from 2010
In 2008, a sensational story that defied belief reached newsstands across the United States. At Gloucester High School in Massachusetts, 18 female students became pregnant simultaneously. It was no accident; the girls had a plan and even committed to carrying it out (though some have denied this in retrospect).
The executives of the Lifetime Network, upon hearing the story, immediately began developing a film adaptation. As a result, “The Pregnancy Pact” was born, in which Thora Birch plays a blogger who goes back to her former mater to investigate the rising rate of teen pregnancies.
A French film called “17 Girls” is based on the same story.
4. “Where the Heart Is” (2000)
Whereas most films dealing with adolescent pregnancy tend to buckle under the emotional weight of the subject matter, “Where the Heart Is” embraces the comedy inherent in the circumstance and produces an uplifting and enjoyable film.
The film follows Novalee Nation (Natalie Portman), a pregnant 17-year-old whose boyfriend leaves her at an Oklahoma Walmart (also starring Ashley Judd, Joan Cusack, and Sally Field). Tempted much?
Rather than give up, Novalee doubles down by relocating to Walmart, where she gives birth. Despite mixed reviews, the movie did well at the box office, and it’s still one of the few uplifting films in the adolescent pregnancy genre.
5. “Fifteen and Pregnant” (1998)
Kirsten Dunst plays Tina Spangler, a 15-year-old girl who, you guessed it, gets pregnant in this TV drama she starred in when she was younger.
Tina’s mother, father, and sister are all given substantial screen time so that we can see how their perspectives on Tina’s unforeseen pregnancy compare and contrast.
Although Dunst has been in several notable films before (including “Interview with the Vampire” and “Jumanji”), she never gives a phony performance. Instead, her heartfelt portrayal of Tina will hit a chord with today’s viewers.
6. “Just Another Girl on the I.R.T.” (1992)
Ariyan A. Johnson’s performance as the self-assured and driven young Chantel Mitchell in “Just Another Girl on the I.R.T.,” one of the most underrated films of its kind, should have made her one of Hollywood’s most promising newcomers.
Race, gender, the AIDS crisis, and teenage pregnancy are essential topics explored in the film. Although it was produced on a tight budget, “Just Another Girl on the I.R.T.” was rated 84% fresh by moviegoers and had a reviewer describe it as “Explosively funny, deeply moving.”

7. “Unexpected” (2015)
One of the most endearing movies on our list, “Unexpected,” follows a teacher at a low-income school as she and one of her pupils unexpectedly become pregnant. With each passing day of their pregnancies, the two ladies grow closer and discover new things about themselves and each other.
The unique premise, excellent acting, and delicate handling of the sensitive topic of teen pregnancy make “Unexpected” a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
It stars Cobie Smulders (who was pregnant during the filming of “How I Met Your Mother”) from that show, as well as a strong performance from newcomer Gail Bean.
8. “Saved!” (2004)
The teenagers at a Christian high school provide a satirical and funny viewpoint on teen pregnancy in the cult hit “Saved!” from the middle of the 2000s.
The film follows a young woman (Jena Malone) who gets pregnant after sleeping with her lover (Macaulay Culkin) so that she might help him overcome his homosexuality.
Other notable actors in the film include Mandy Moore, Mary-Louise Parker, Patrick Fugit, and Jena Malone. Though it’s an absurdist comedy (and has been compared to both “Mean Girls” and “Election”), “Saved!” manages to be surprisingly sweet, with both hilarious and touching moments that any pregnant adolescent would identify with.
9. “Precious” (2009)
In contrast to other pregnancy-themed films that employ humor to lighten the mood, “Precious” takes a serious tone throughout. The film follows Precious, a 16-year-old girl who, while caring for her mentally disabled daughter, learns that she is pregnant again.
The father is sexually abusive, and the mother is emotionally and physically violent; he is responsible for both pregnancies. Mo’Nique, who won an Oscar for her role as Precious’ truly terrible mother, Mary Lee, is just one of several outstanding actors in the film.
The film’s optimistic tone belies its dark subject matter, which depicts Precious’s struggle to escape poverty.
10. “Juno” (2007)
With hilarious one-liners, outlandish situations, and unforgettable protagonists, this comedy turns the teen pregnancy genre on its head. Our leader, Juno, the protagonist of this article, is unlike any of the other protagonists we’ve discussed.
Director Jason Reitman brings Diablo Cody’s Oscar-winning script to life by drawing the best performances from his all-star cast.
The 2007 picture “Juno” was widely regarded as excellent and was nominated for four Academy Awards and received a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film received the highest possible accolades when critic Roger Ebert named it the finest of the year.
