After a long wait, The Super Mario Bros Movie 2 is finally happening. It’s a follow-up to the hit first movie.
Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto, the heads of Illumination and Nintendo, stated on Mario Day 2024 (March 10) that a new movie set in the world of Super Mario Bros will come out in April 2026.
On the other hand, they didn’t say that it was a straight sequel in the video, so it could be a spin-off with different characters. According to Miyamoto, they are “thinking about broadening Mario’s world further” and promised more news.

When will Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 come out?
According to Digital Spy, The Super Mario Bros Movie 2 (that’s what we’re calling it until we get an official name) will be in theaters in the US on April 3, 2026. We don’t know if it’s a straight sequel or not.
As of now, there is no set date for the UK, but it’s likely to be that same day or later that month.
We don’t know when they will start making them yet. The same people who worked on the first movie will work on the follow-up, though: directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and writer Matthew Fogel.
How does the ending of Super Mario Bros. Movie set up for a sequel?
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is mostly a stand-alone creation story that aims to have Mario and Luigi move to the Mushroom Kingdom, where they are now.
It was already said that Yoshi will be in a sequel, and there are lots of stories in the games about him. The people who made the first movie are more likely to make up their own story for the second one, with Yoshi possibly being free in Brooklyn.
Bowser was also beaten by Mario and Luigi in the big ending of the movie before being shrunk down to a tiny size. In the Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser is caught and put in a cage in Peach’s house during the credits. He’ll be back to cause more trouble in the sequel, though.
We’ll expect the next movie to bring up these loose ends in some way, even if it doesn’t do so directly.
