She got her to start in show business by trying out for the travelling company of a play called “Stage Door.” When she was 19, in 1943, she went to New York City to become a full-time actress.
She quickly got jobs on Broadway and in TV shows and commercials. The most important thing was that she got an ad for Cloret gum. Jackie Gleason saw that commercial. At the time, he was hosting and directing a show called “Cavalcade of Stars,” the first show that would become “The Jackie Gleason Show.”
He put her in a sketch and loved how she did. In a way, she wasn’t the first actor to play Trixie Norton. Elaine Stritch played the original version of the role on “Cavalcade of Stars.”
