The Russian prison service said that Alexei Navalny, the most well-known opposition leader in Russia, died on Friday after passing out and falling at the prison colony north of the Arctic Circle, where he was serving a long prison sentence.
According to Reuters, Alexei Navalny was a lawyer, anti-corruption activist, and leader of the Russian alternative political party Russia of the Future. He was also a lawyer and an activist against graft.
He spoke out against Russian President Vladimir Putin and his government, calling for changes to fight crime and make Russia more democratic.
Navalny was poisoned in August 2020 with a nerve weapon used by the military. He lived after getting treatment in Germany. When he went back to Russia in January 2021, he was caught and given a total of 30 ½ years in prison.
In 2024, Navalny passed away after going for a walk at the Polar Wolf Arctic prison colony, where he was serving his term. Many leaders in the West blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for Navalny’s death and were outraged and condemned his death.
Euronews says that hge was found guilty of embezzlement in 2013 and given a five-year prison term in what he called a politically motivated prosecution. However, the prosecutor’s office later asked for his release while they filed an appeal, which was a surprise.
Later, a higher court put the sentence on hold. Navalny signed up to run for mayor of Moscow the day before he was convicted.
Many people thought that his release was because of large protests in the capital against his sentence, but the opposition thought it was because the government wanted to make the mayoral race look more legitimate.
Navalny came in second, which was a great showing against the incumbent, who had the support of Putin’s political machine and was known for making the city look better and improving its infrastructure.
Boris Nemtsov, another charismatic politician, was shot and killed on a bridge near the Kremlin in 2015. This made Navalny very famous.
When Putin talked about Navalny, he made sure to never call the protester by name. Instead, he used phrases like “that person” or something similar to make him seem less important. But he wasn’t ever in trouble.
People in the opposition, including Navalny himself, often thought that his support for the rights of ethnic Russians was too patriotic.
Many people have said that he took a vague stance after Russia illegally took over Crimea in 2014. Navalny said over and over that he didn’t see a future for Ukraine in the area.
In many talks, he avoided saying that Crimea should be returned to Ukraine, even though he was against the way Putin took it over.
Still, the studies that his Anti-Corruption Fund did help him get through most of the problems that came up because of these comments.
Russian state-run TV stations didn’t show Navalny’s investigations, but younger Russians were interested in them because of YouTube videos and posts on his website and social media accounts.
His writing changed from being mostly about crime to being a general attack on Putin’s government, which has been in charge of Russia for over twenty years.
Navalny was one of the main people who got people to protest on a huge scale against questionable national election results and the fact that independent candidates were not allowed to run.

Being poisoned in Siberia
In 2019, while Navalny was in jail for his part in election protests, he was taken to the hospital with what the authorities said was an allergic response. Some doctors said it looked like poisoning.
A year later, on August 20, 2020, he got very sick on a trip from Tomsk, Siberia, where he was organizing candidates for the opposition, to Moscow.
He passed out in the aisle as he came back from the bathroom, so the plane had to make an emergency landing in Omsk. He spent two days in the hospital there while his friends begged doctors to let him be taken to Germany for treatment.
Once he got to Germany, doctors found that he had been poisoned with a type of Novichok that was similar to the nerve agent that almost killed Sergei Skripal and his daughter in England in 2018 and also killed another woman.
Navalny was put into a medically induced sleep for about two weeks. It took him several more weeks to be able to speak and move again.
The Russian government then made things even worse by saying that Navalny had broken the rules of a suspended sentence for one of his embezzlement convictions while he was in Germany and that he would be arrested if he came back home.
But he wasn’t the type to stay abroad. On January 17, 2021, Navalny and his wife got on a plane to go to Moscow. He was tried, found guilty, and given a two-and-a-half-year prison term in just over two weeks.
More than 10,000 people were held by police during the protests, which spread to all parts of Russia. When Putin sent troops into Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Navalny strongly opposed the war on social media while he was in jail and court.
He was given an extra nine years in prison for embezzlement and contempt of court less than a month after the war started, even though he and his allies thought the case against him was made up.
Right away, new investigations were started, and in August 2023, Navalny was found guilty of extremism and given a 19-year prison term.
The Federal Penitentiary Service says that he felt sick and lost consciousness after going for a walk in the jail on Friday.
He died, even though an ambulance came to try to save him. They said they were “under investigation” into what killed the person.
