Before Baahubali, Prabhas and SS Rajamouli had joined hands for the first time for Chatrapathi, which released in 2005. The South film became a sleeper hit and was unanimously loved by the audience and critics alike. Back in 2020, it was announced that Chatrapathi will be remade in Hindi with Telugu hero Bellamkonda Sai Sreenivas stepping into the shoes of Prabhas. A reboot of the 2005 Telugu Prabhas-starrer by the same name, Chatrapathi begins with Savitri Bhatia (Bhagyashree) bringing up her stepson Shiva and biological son Ashok in Pakistan. As the trio is driven out by hostile locals, a jealous Ashok lies to his mother that Shiva is trapped in their burning house, whereas the older brother is safely whisked away on a boat by their family friend (Rajendra Gupta). What follows throughout the movie is a series of cliched tracks centring around Shiva’s (Bellamkonda Sreenivas) life and search for his family in India.

Sreenivas Bellamkonda is too good in the role of Chatrapathi. The actor has put his heart and soul into the Hindi remake, which is sure to please the mass audiences. Compared to his previous movies, Sreenivas has improved a lot in terms of dialogue delivery. His action scenes are stunning, and Sreenivas shows the dancer in him once again. All in all, Sreenivas makes a promising debut in Hindi cinema.

As a young boy, separated from his family, constantly aching for the mother (Bhagyashree) who thinks he perished in a fire, Shivaji is the classic Indian hero whose mother-worship is always going to be much more intense than his feelings for the heroine. Nushrratt Bharuccha comes on for a few speaking scenes and some songs in which she moves-and-shakes, because that’s all she has to do: bring up the rear.

An aimless action drama that is primarily set in Pakistan, filmmaker VV Vinayak brings the most dated, conventional, melodramatic and avoidable film that seems to belong from the 1990s or even from the stone age. Poverty, slavery, monopoly of the powerful, the very famous maa ka logic, this film has everything done to death.

Chatrapathi, which marks Telugu star Sreenivas Bellamkonda’s Bollywood debut, reeks of unoriginality. It’s not because it is a remake of S S Rajamouli’s Telugu film of the same name from 2005. A Mahadev’s stale screenplay and Director V V Vinayak’s uninspired approach invoke the been-there-seen-that-numerous-times-before feeling for viewers.

Sometimes, while cleaning up the cupboards, we come across old photographs or documents which remind us of our flaws and leave us with an uneasy feeling. Watching  Chatrapthi leaves one with the same emotion about the  masala fare we once consumed without burning the palate.
