In the boat jumping challenge, a person jumps off a moving boat into the water, sometimes going at pretty high speeds. People have tried everything from backflips to cannon balls as they enter the water because it’s easy. Even though it might seem harmless, officials all over the country are warning people not to participate in the trend.
The Tiktok Boat Jumping Trend May Be Extremely Dangerous: Trend Kills Four People In Alabama
Jim Dennis of Alabama’s Childersburg Rescue Squad told WBMA, the boat jumping challenge led to four “easily avoidable” drowning deaths in the state, which occurred in the last six months.
“They were doing a TikTok challenge. It’s where you get in a boat going at a high rate of speed, you jump off the side of the boat, don’t dive, you’re jumping off feet first and you just kinda lean into the water,” he said about the people who died.
He added:
“That is a very big concern because we have seen this pattern emerge over the last two years and it’s sporadic, but it’s something that needs to go away and stay away,” he said.
In one instance in February, a father died while jumping off a boat, with his wife and three young children on board. According to Dennis, the wife “unfortunately recorded” her husband’s death. He also noted that the most recent death came in mid-May, while adding that the four people who drowned in the state were males.
“I think people, if they’re being filmed on camera, I think they’re more likely to do something stupid because they want to show off in front of their friends for social media,” he told WPDE. “Do not do it. It’s not worth your life.”

But another story from AL.com says that the deaths in Alabama are “not to blame” for the TikTok boat jumping challenge. “The head of an Alabama rescue squad said he doesn’t know that anyone in the state has died from a boat jumping TikTok challenge, despite numerous published reports quoting him as saying otherwise,” the report says.
Captain Jim Dennis says his words about the four drownings were taken out of context. “We’ve had four drownings in the last six to eight months (that the Childersburg Rescue Squad worked) and some of those were just drownings,” he said.
But on July 10, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency released a statement to correct the report that these drownings were linked to the TikTok trend. In a statement to ABC, the agency said that the WNBA was responsible for letting the news out. first responders warning against a deadly boating TikTok trend after recent drownings”, with incorrect information.
“The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Marine Patrol Division does not have any record(s) of boating or marine-related fatalities in Alabama that can be directly linked to TikTok or a trend on TikTok,” the statement read. “One individual was fatally injured after jumping from a moving vessel in 2020 and a similar marine-related fatality occurred in 2021, however, both fatalities cannot be linked to TikTok.”
Even if it’s not part of a TikTok trend, the best way to avoid injuries or death that could be very bad is to never jump out of moving boats. It would help if you got all the thrills you want from jumping off a still boat, and it probably won’t cause any fatal accidents, at least not by itself.
