Who is James Baldwin?
Baldwin was born in New York on August 2, 1924. He wrote plays and was a strong voice in the 1960s Civil Rights movement. It was one of the first times Black writers used gay subjects in their writing. His book Giovanni’s Room, which came out in 1956 and caused much controversy, may be the most famous example.
Baldwin grew up in Harlem. It was in high school that he became deeply interested in writing. After 12 years of work, his first book, Tell It on the Mountain, came out in 1953. It was a semi-autobiographical story.

Why does James Baldwin show up on the Google Doodle?
The site’s homepage now has a picture of Baldwin to honour the 26th anniversary of releasing his Collected Essays after he died in 1998.
It also happens on the first day of Black History Month, a time to remember the past, honour the ongoing fight for social justice, and celebrate the successes of African Americans, as per reports of Express.
