Raghunath Paleri wrote the screenplay, and the movie follows the adventures of three kids who free a magical indigenous genie named Kuttichathan from the clutches of an evil sorcerer and become fast friends with the genie.

Ilaiyaraaja composed the score for the film, which also features work by Ashok Kumar on photography and T. R. Shekhar on editing. In it, Jagadish and Zainuddin made their first appearances as actors.

In 2010, it was re-released as Chutti Chathan with new scenes starring Prakash Raj and Santhanam in Tamil. As of the 25th of August, 2011, a remastered version was published with new material.
