Swindells was born on born 19 September 1996 in Lewes, East Sussex. His mother came from a Romani background. She died when Swindells was seven from bowel cancer. After she died, he and his father moved in with his father’s parents in West Chiltington until they moved to Billingshurst. He quit college when he was 17.
Swindells started acting when a friend dared him to try out for a local play, and he got the lead part. He then appeared in two more local plays and signed with an agent after the third one.
